High-rise fire at South City Complex in Kolkata
Overview
A major fire broke out on a high-rise floor of the South City Complex, an upscale residential housing complex in South Kolkata. The blaze was reported on a Friday morning in Tower 3, specifically affecting the 27th or 28th floor near residential flats and servants quarters.
The incident caused significant panic as thick black smoke covered the area. For safety, electricity was disconnected and elevator services were suspended, forcing residents of the 30-story tower to evacuate via stairs. This process presented difficulties for children, the elderly, and the sick.
Multiple fire engines were deployed to the scene to combat the blaze. While the fire was eventually brought under control, officials noted that ensuring it was completely extinguished required additional time. There were no immediate reports of casualties or injuries. A short circuit is being considered a possible cause, and forensic and fire department experts are expected to conduct an investigation.
