South Florida schools face closures amid 38,000 student enrollment drop

School districts in South Florida, including Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach, are facing significant closures and budget cuts following a combined loss of approximately 38,000 students. The decline in enrollment is largely attributed to a decrease in international students and migrants, particularly from Venezuelan and Haitian communities, following the loss of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for these groups.

Miami-Dade, the third-largest school district in the United States, has already closed or merged nine centers this year and is reviewing the future of 27 others. The district reported a loss of 14,365 students in the previous term and an additional 18,910 this August, resulting in a reduction of 515 teachers. Superintendent José Dotres noted that international admissions dropped to roughly 3,000 students last year, compared to previous annual figures of 14,000 to 22,000.

In Broward County, officials have proposed closing ten schools, while Palm Beach has implemented a hiring freeze and eliminated 76 school library positions. Palm Beach reported a loss of 6,959 students, more than double its initial projections.
