South Florida school enrollment decline

South Florida school districts are undergoing significant operational and budgetary restructuring due to declining student enrollment.

Initial reports indicated that Miami-Dade County was implementing staffing cuts and closing or merging nine schools following a loss of 13,000 students. During this period, the district also ended universal free lunches, transitioning to a model where free meals are only provided at schools meeting specific federal criteria.

Subsequent data shows the enrollment decline has intensified, with a combined regional loss of approximately 38,000 students. In Miami-Dade, the district reported a total loss of over 33,000 students between the previous school year and August, leading to the reduction of 515 teachers and a review of 27 additional schools. Broward County has proposed closing ten schools amid 60,000 vacant placements, while Palm Beach County has implemented a hiring freeze and eliminated 76 library positions. Factors cited for the decline include lower international student arrivals, rising living costs, low birth rates, and increased enrollment in private institutions.

Newer data specifies that the decline is largely attributed to a decrease in international students and migrants, particularly from Venezuelan and Haitian communities, following the loss of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for these groups. Superintendent José Dotres noted that international admissions dropped to roughly 3,000 students last year, compared to previous annual figures of 14,000 to 22,000. Additionally, Palm Beach reported a loss of 6,959 students, which is more than double its initial projections.
