South Korea completes first commercial Arctic voyage to Europe
The South Korean container ship PanStar Acro has completed its first commercial round trip to Europe via the Arctic Northern Sea Route. Departing from Busan on August 22, the vessel returned to port after 50 days, slightly exceeding the initial 45-day estimate.
The voyage included stops at Felixstowe in the United Kingdom, Rotterdam in the Netherlands, and Gdansk in Poland. By utilizing the Arctic passage along the Russian coast, the route reportedly cut travel time by approximately ten days each way compared to the traditional route through the Suez Canal.
South Korean President Lee Jae-myung identified Arctic maritime navigation as a priority, with officials aiming to establish regular services by 2030 to transform Busan into a global logistics hub. While the route offers significant time savings, industry experts note challenges such as unpredictable ice conditions, seasonal limitations, and the need for specialized insurance and fuel considerations. The Russian state corporation Rosatom provided navigational guidance and weather information during the transit.
