North Korea prepares for potential troop deployment to Russia

South Korean military intelligence reports that while North Korea continues to prepare for potential troop deployments to Russia, there are currently no signs of an imminent dispatch of additional forces. This assessment follows claims by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy that Russia was preparing to bring in 30,000 North Korean troops to assist in the conflict.

The South Korean Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) estimates that North Korea has already deployed more than 16,000 troops to Russia since October 2024, including combat engineers and construction personnel. Additionally, Pyongyang is believed to have provided over 15 million rounds of artillery shells to Russia to support its war efforts.

While North Korean official Kim Yo-jong has dismissed reports of further troop movements as “completely groundless,” South Korean authorities remain vigilant. Intelligence suggests that North Korea is also utilizing the conflict to gain real-world combat data, which may lead to improvements in the performance and accuracy of its missile systems and other weaponry.
