South Korea dispatches relief team to Nepal following deadly floods
Massive floods and glacial collapses in the Himalayan region, specifically affecting northern Nepal and the Tibet border, have resulted in at least 1,019 deaths and left over 4,400 people missing. The disaster has caused extensive damage to critical infrastructure, including 12 hydropower plants and 32 bridges.
South Korea has deployed a 44-member Korea Disaster Relief Team (KDRT) to Nepal to assist in search and rescue operations. The team, led by Lee Kyu-ho, includes personnel from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, KOICA, and the National Fire Agency, equipped with specialized tools such as high-resolution drones, thermal imaging, and search dogs. A primary focus of the mission is locating nine South Korean citizens—six from Doosan Enerbility and three from Korea South-East Power—who remain missing after working at the Upper Trishuli-1 hydropower plant.
In response to the rising death toll and the rapid decomposition of remains, Nepal has implemented a new identification protocol involving DNA sampling and photography. The Nepal Army has also been active in recovery efforts, recently retrieving at least 10 bodies from the Narayani River in Chitwan. Meanwhile, South Korea has pledged $1 million in humanitarian aid to support relief efforts.
