South Korea economy sees record growth driven by semiconductor exports

South Korea's economy is experiencing significant growth, driven largely by a surge in semiconductor exports. In the second quarter, nominal GDP rose by 26.4% year-on-year, marking its fastest growth in 47 years. Real GDP grew by 0.6% compared to the previous quarter, supported by strong exports and a 0.4% increase in private consumption.

Recent data from the first ten days of September shows exports reached $34.97 billion, an 82.6% increase from the previous year, setting a new record for that period. Semiconductors were the primary driver, with exports jumping 270.1% to $16.48 billion, accounting for 47.1% of total exports. This surge contributed to a record trade surplus of $10.37 billion for the period.

The Bank of Korea predicts that per capita Gross National Income (GNI) is highly likely to surpass $40,000 this year. To support continued momentum, the government announced plans to expand trade finance for small and medium-sized export enterprises, increasing support to 120 trillion won this year and 140 trillion won next year.
