South Korea exports surge 68.7% in August driven by semiconductor records

South Korea reported a significant surge in exports for August, reaching $98.25 billion, a 68.7% increase compared to the previous year. This performance was primarily driven by a record-breaking semiconductor export value of $46.65 billion, representing a 209% year-on-year increase. The boom in semiconductor and computer exports, the latter rising 419.5% due to high demand for enterprise SSDs, is attributed to sustained investment in AI infrastructure by global hyperscalers.

Despite the export strength, domestic economic indicators showed mixed results for July. Industrial production remained flat compared to the previous month, while retail sales fell by 2.4%, largely due to a decline in durable goods like automobiles. However, facility investment saw a notable increase of 7.5%, marking its largest growth in five months, led by investments in transport equipment and semiconductor manufacturing machinery.

The country maintained a strong trade position, recording a trade surplus of $34.75 billion for August, marking the 19th consecutive month of surplus. While exports to major markets like China and the United States grew significantly, other sectors such as automobile and ship exports faced declines due to production disruptions and reduced delivery volumes.
