South Korea employment rises in August amid ongoing youth job crisis
South Korea's employment numbers showed a recovery in August, with the number of employed persons aged 15 and older increasing by 184,000 compared to the same month last year. This marks the largest increase in five months. While the decline in the manufacturing and construction sectors slowed, the accommodation and food service industries saw a significant drop of 61,000 jobs.
Despite the overall growth, the youth labor market remains in a downturn. The number of employed individuals aged 15 to 29 decreased by 143,000, marking the 46th consecutive month of decline. The youth employment rate fell to 44.1%, continuing a downward trend for 28 months.
Related research highlights the psychological impact of this trend, noting that 52.7% of unemployed youth report experiencing burnout, primarily due to career uncertainty. This rate is significantly higher than that of employed youth (32.4%). The Federation of Korean Industries has suggested strengthening vocational training and employment services to address these challenges.
