South Korea expands KTX and SRT reservation window to two months

Following the integration of KTX and SRT operations, South Korea is implementing several changes to railway services. Starting in October, the reservation window for KTX and SRT tickets will expand from one month to two months before the departure date. This change aims to align train bookings with airline and hotel reservations, allowing travelers to plan year-end and holiday trips more efficiently.

As part of the high-speed rail integration, average fares have decreased by approximately 10% following the unification of pricing standards based on SRT rates. Additionally, daily seat capacity has increased, particularly on routes departing from Suseo.

However, passengers should be aware of stricter cancellation policies. Penalty fees for weekend and holiday tickets have increased, with charges applying even for cancellations made two days in advance. To combat the issue of 'no-shows' and empty seats, authorities have also increased surcharges for unauthorized boarding. For those seeking canceled tickets, the most effective times to check are midnight the day before departure or three hours before the train departs, as these periods coincide with shifts in cancellation fee structures.
