South Korea KTX and SRT rail service integration

Overview

South Korea has integrated its KTX and SRT high-speed rail services, ending a decade of split management between Korail and SR. The integration, which began on September 1, 2026, has increased train frequencies and seat availability on major lines, such as the Honam and Jeolla Lines. Passenger fares have been reduced by an average of approximately 10% to align KTX pricing with SRT levels, and the reservation system has been unified under a single platform.

Following the initial integration, authorities announced that starting in October, the ticket reservation window will expand from one month to two months to facilitate better travel planning. This extension, implemented by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and Korail, aims to align railway booking with international flight patterns to assist domestic and international travelers in coordinating trips.

To further support tourism, the government plans to expand website language support from seven to ten languages by the end of the year, adding French, German, and Mongolian. Additionally, the reservation system is being developed to support global easy payment methods, such as WeChat Pay and Alipay, to supplement existing credit card options. While capacity and booking windows have improved, new regulations have introduced stricter cancellation policies, including higher penalty fees for weekend and holiday tickets. Surcharges for unauthorized boarding have also been increased to address ‘no-shows’ and empty seats.
