South Korea issues heavy rain and landslide alerts
South Korea is facing heavy rainfall across much of the country, particularly in southern regions where cumulative precipitation could exceed 250mm. The Ministry of the Interior and Safety has raised the heavy rain crisis alert level from ‘interest’ to ‘attention’ to manage potential flooding and landslides.
In response to the weather, the Korea Forest Service has issued landslide crisis alerts for Gwangju, Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam. Authorities have already closed 162 locations, including hiking trails and bridges, to ensure public safety. The rainfall, attributed to an extratropical cyclone weakened from Typhoon Dolphin, is expected to provide much-needed relief to southern regions that have been suffering from severe drought, with some areas seeing only a fraction of their seasonal average rainfall.
While the rain is expected to temporarily mitigate the recent intense heatwave, temperatures are still expected to remain high in some areas. Additionally, local governments in Gyeonggi Province have been deploying smart unmanned water dispensers to combat heat-related illnesses, which have reached 858 cases in the province as of August 14.
