South Korea exports hit record $71.4 billion in September

South Korea reported record-breaking export figures for the first 20 days of September, with outbound shipments reaching $71.4 billion. This represents a 78.3% increase compared to the same period last year, setting a new high for this specific timeframe. The surge was primarily driven by the semiconductor sector, which saw exports jump 259.4% to $34.12 billion. Semiconductors now account for approximately 47.8% of the nation's total exports.

Other notable export gains included petroleum products (up 47.8%), ships (up 63.0%), and automobiles (up 9.3%). Conversely, exports of wireless communication devices saw a slight decline of 0.4%. Major trading partners contributing to this growth included China, with a 113.8% increase, and the United States, which saw a 118.0% rise.

On the import side, spending rose 26.7% to $48.4 billion, fueled by increased demand for semiconductors (up 88.8%), crude oil (up 37.3%), and semiconductor manufacturing equipment (up 55.6%). This resulted in a significant trade surplus of $23 billion for the period. The sustained demand for AI infrastructure is cited as a key driver for the semiconductor boom.
