South Korea extends Jeju 4.3 victim compensation and reporting

The South Korean Ministry of the Interior and Safety has announced the implementation of an amended enforcement decree for the Jeju 4.3 Special Act, effective September 1. This measure aims to provide additional opportunities for victims and bereaved families of the Jeju 4.3 Incident to report their status and seek compensation.

Key provisions of the amendment include a new six-month reporting period for victims and their families, scheduled to run from February 1, 2027, to July 31, 2027. This follows recommendations from Jeju Special Self-Governing Province and the Jeju 4.3 Bereaved Families Association to assist those who missed previous reporting windows.

Furthermore, the deadline for applying for victim compensation has been extended by three years, from the end of 2026 to December 31, 2029. The deadline for correcting or creating family relationship registers, as well as reporting marriages and adoptions affected by the incident, has also been extended by two years, moving from August 2026 to August 31, 2028.
