South Korea housing plan targets 230,000 units by 2030
The South Korean government has announced a housing supply plan aiming to provide 230,000 additional units by 2030. A key component of this strategy involves the potential release of Greenbelt (development restriction zone) land to secure new public housing sites. The government intends to announce over 73,000 additional housing units within the year.
To prevent speculation, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport has temporarily designated 503.82 square kilometers of Greenbelt land in Seoul and surrounding metropolitan areas as land transaction permit areas. Potential sites under consideration include areas in Gangnam, Seocho, and Songpa, as well as Yongsan Park.
However, the plan faces significant opposition from the Seoul Metropolitan Government. Mayor Oh Se-hoon has expressed strong opposition to lifting Greenbelt restrictions, emphasizing the need to preserve green spaces and focusing instead on urban redevelopment. While the Ministry of Land holds the legal authority to lift these designations for public housing, tensions remain between central and local authorities regarding the balance between rapid supply and environmental preservation.
