South Korea implements AI-driven smart parking solutions

South Korean municipalities and private companies are deploying artificial intelligence to optimize urban parking management. Suwon Special City has been selected by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport to participate in a 2026 Smart City Regulatory Sandbox. This initiative supports Dongsung Itech in testing a “flexible parking” service, which uses an AI-based SaaS platform to digitize information for roadside idle lanes that are typically difficult to use for parking under current laws.

The platform allows users to check real-time availability, make reservations, and complete contactless payments via mobile apps, ARS, or QR codes without the need for large-scale physical infrastructure like barriers. The 24-month pilot project involves collaboration between Suwon City, the Suwon City Research Institute, the Korea Transportation Safety Authority, and the Korean Society of Transportation.

In a separate application of smart technology, Hi-Parking has demonstrated its “Ai-PAS” system at the Seoul Station Transfer Center. This AI-based smart video guidance system uses 360-degree fisheye cameras to track vehicle and pedestrian movements in real time. The system provides dynamic guidance via smart electronic displays, directing drivers to available spots, guiding electric vehicles to charging stations, and issuing pedestrian safety warnings to prevent accidents.
