Smart parking technology implementation in South Korea

Overview

South Korean municipalities and private entities are advancing smart parking technologies through public-private partnerships and AI integration.

Ansan City and Hyundai AutoEver demonstrated a smart public parking navigation service at the Jungang Station transfer lot. This technology directs drivers to specific vacant spaces using real-time data, moving beyond traditional systems that only guide drivers to parking lot entrances. Ansan City intends to expand this usage across 17 smart public parking lots as part of a larger demonstration project led by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety.

In Suwon Special City, a 2026 Smart City Regulatory Sandbox initiative is testing a “flexible parking” service. This AI-based SaaS platform digitizes information for roadside idle lanes, allowing users to check availability, make reservations, and complete contactless payments. Additionally, the “Ai-PAS” system was demonstrated at the Seoul Station Transfer Center. This AI-driven video guidance system utilizes 360-degree fisheye cameras to track movements, providing dynamic guidance for available spots, electric vehicle charging stations, and pedestrian safety warnings.
