South Korea intensifies fire prevention inspections for holidays and summer

The South Korea National Fire Agency has launched a fire prevention initiative running from August 26 to September 27 to mitigate risks during the Chuseok holiday period. The agency will conduct unannounced inspections of retail facilities, traditional markets, warehouses, transportation hubs, and lodging facilities to ensure compliance with safety regulations, such as preventing the blockage of emergency exits and the disabling of fire suppression systems.

Data from the National Fire Information System indicates that over the past five years, 2,077 fires occurred during Chuseok holidays, resulting in nine deaths, 100 injuries, and approximately 22 billion won in property damage. In response, fire authorities will also focus on vulnerable sites like nursing homes and residential greenhouses.

Separately, the Taean Fire Station is conducting safety inspections of 22 self-service and closed gas stations through August 31. These inspections aim to prevent fires and explosions caused by rising summer temperatures and increased vapor accumulation, focusing on facility standards and the management of hazardous materials.
