South Korea fire safety inspection initiatives

South Korea has initiated comprehensive fire safety measures targeting both industrial facilities and public risk areas. The government launched a multi-year, three-stage nationwide inspection program for over 190,000 factories and warehouses, scheduled to run from late 2024 through 2027. This initiative aims to upgrade safety standards to “advanced-country” levels through new requirements for non-combustible materials, expanded sprinkler coverage, and intelligent detection devices, supported by significant government subsidies and loan schemes.

Complementing these long-term industrial inspections, the National Fire Agency has implemented targeted prevention initiatives to mitigate seasonal and holiday risks. This includes unannounced inspections of retail spaces, traditional markets, and transportation hubs ahead of the Chuseok holiday to prevent accidents in vulnerable sites. Additionally, local authorities have conducted specific inspections of gas stations to prevent fires and explosions caused by high summer temperatures.
