South Korea's northern provinces battered by severe rains, floods and a missing senior

Intense rainstorms on July 9 dumped up to 214 mm in North Gyeongsang province, prompting a severe flood warning. In Yeongju, a man in his 70s was swept away by rapid currents and remains missing. Landslide alerts were issued across the region, and authorities evacuated dozens of households, closed hundreds of roads, bridges and railway services.

Jeonbuk province also experienced heavy rain exceeding 200 mm, but reported no casualties; local fire crews cleared fallen trees and safety teams handled 41 incidents such as tree falls and drainage blockages. In Seoul, repeated flash‑flooding hit neighborhoods such as Munrae‑dong, with dozens of homes and businesses inundated for a second year in a row.

In Chungbuk, 166 flood‑related reports were logged, leading to the evacuation of about 210 residents and the closure of 90 road and bridge sections. Over 2,200 emergency personnel, including police, fire and military units, were dispatched across the affected provinces to manage water‑related hazards and support residents.
