South Korea current account surplus hits $46.1 billion in August
South Korea recorded a current account surplus of $46.1 billion in August, marking the second-highest monthly surplus on record. This figure represents a $4 billion increase from the previous month and continues a streak of three consecutive months where the surplus exceeded $40 billion.
The growth was primarily driven by a robust goods account, which posted a $46.81 billion surplus. Total exports surged 82.1 percent year-on-year to reach $104.8 billion, fueled largely by a global semiconductor upcycle. Specifically, chip exports more than tripled on a customs-clearance basis.
In contrast, the services account saw a deficit of $1.68 billion, impacted by widening deficits in travel and other business services. Despite this, the country has maintained a current account surplus for 40 consecutive months, dating back to May 2023.
