South Korea targets regional tourism growth amid rising visitor numbers

South Korea is seeing a significant surge in inbound tourism, with projections suggesting visitor numbers could reach 23 million this year. Data from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism indicates that between January and July, visitor numbers rose 21.3% year-on-year, while spending increased by 33.2% to $16.8 billion. A notable shift in travel behavior is evident, as 89% of visitors are now independent travelers rather than part of organized package tours, focusing on diverse interests such as wellness, gastronomy, and beauty.

To capitalize on this growth and address the concentration of tourists in the Seoul metropolitan area, experts and government officials are focusing on regional revitalization. The Korea Tourism Organization is launching the ‘5 Colors of Taste Travel’ campaign, recruiting 700 participants for themed trips—including hiking, activities, ecology, and gourmet experiences—designed to draw visitors to declining population areas.

Discussions among industry experts emphasize the need to expand the ‘K-tourism’ appeal beyond Seoul by improving regional transportation, accommodation quality, and local content. The goal is to transform South Korea from a destination where tourists merely visit specific landmarks into one where they experience local daily life and stay longer in various provinces.
