South Korea to crack down on illegal fishing in West Sea
South Korea's Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries has announced a month-long joint crackdown on illegal fishing starting October 1. The operation will involve fishery management teams from the East, West, and South Seas, alongside local governments and the National Federation of Fisheries Cooperatives.
National fishery guidance vessels will be concentrated in areas with a high risk of illegal activity by Chinese fishing boats, specifically around the West Sea 5 Islands and the boundaries of the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). Authorities will take legal action against unauthorized fishing or violations of permit conditions.
Domestic fishing vessels will also face inspections to ensure compliance with designated fishing zones, closed seasons, and minimum size requirements for catches. While minor infractions may result in on-site guidance, intentional or habitual violations that damage fishery resources will face strict legal penalties. Additionally, the crackdown will include safety inspections, such as checking the use of life jackets and the functionality of essential onboard equipment.
