South Korean illegal fishing enforcement
Overview
Data from the South Korean Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries indicates that between 2021 and August 2026, authorities detected 6,636 cases of illegal fishing. The most frequent violations included gear infractions and unlicensed or unauthorized fishing. Regional enforcement was highest in the West Sea, followed by the South and East Seas, with South Jeolla Province recording the most enforcement actions.
In response to these ongoing threats, the Ministry announced a month-long joint crackdown beginning October 1. This operation will involve fishery management teams, local governments, and the National Federation of Fisheries Cooperatives. Enforcement efforts will concentrate national fishery guidance vessels in high-risk areas, particularly around the West Sea 5 Islands and the boundaries of the Exclusive Economic Zone, to target unauthorized activity by Chinese fishing boats.
Domestic vessels will also undergo inspections regarding fishing zones, closed seasons, and catch size requirements. While minor infractions may receive on-site guidance, authorities stated that intentional or habitual violations will face strict legal penalties. The crackdown will also encompass safety inspections for onboard equipment and life jacket usage.
