South Korea to deploy marine IoT network in Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam

The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries and the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) are launching a pilot marine Internet of Things (IoT) wireless communication network in the waters of Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongsangnam-do. The project, which involves an investment of 20 billion won through 2030, aims to develop a communication system based on maritime aids to navigation.

Marine IoT utilizes small terminals attached to people, vessels, and maritime facilities to transmit location and sensor data. These terminals are designed to operate for up to five years without recharging, making them highly effective in maritime areas where traditional communication is difficult. The pilot program will involve installing base stations on lighthouse facilities and developing dedicated terminals.

Full pilot services are expected to begin in 2029, with applications for collaborative institutions open until late November. Selected partners, including local governments and maritime associations, will receive free access to the communication network and data monitoring services. The technology is intended to prevent the loss of fishing gear, enhance the safety of solo fishers, prevent fish mortality in aquaculture farms, and reduce secondary accidents caused by navigation obstacles. Following the pilot, the government plans to expand the network nationwide after 2030.
