Technological development in Southeast South Korea

Overview

The southeastern South Korean provinces of Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongsangnam-do are implementing various technological initiatives aimed at industrial and maritime advancement.

In September 2026, the region was selected for a national quantum sensing cluster project scheduled from 2027 to 2030. This initiative, supported by Pusan National University and the Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST), seeks to integrate quantum sensing, materials, and algorithms into sectors such as shipbuilding, maritime, aerospace, defense, and energy.

Concurrently, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries and the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) announced a 20 billion won pilot program to deploy a marine Internet of Things (IoT) wireless communication network in the same region. Running through 2030, the project aims to develop a communication system using maritime aids to navigation to enhance safety for fishers, prevent gear loss, and monitor aquaculture. Full pilot services are expected by 2029, with plans for nationwide expansion after 2030.
