South Korean activists allege abuse by Israeli forces during Gaza aid detention

Three activists – South Koreans Kim Ah‑hyun and Kim Dong‑hyeon and Korean‑American Jonathan Victor Lee – said they were sexually and physically abused by Israeli soldiers after their aid vessels were intercepted while heading to the Gaza Strip. They described beatings, electric shocks, taser injuries and broken bones, and medical exams confirmed injuries such as rhabdomyolysis, a perforated eardrum and a broken rib.

The Israeli Embassy in Seoul rejected the claims, stating the activists were not detained but were processed and expelled promptly after arrival at Ashdod port. It said the allegations “further call into question” the activists’ statements.

The dispute highlights diplomatic tension between South Korea and Israel over the treatment of humanitarian aid volunteers.
