South Korean agencies partner to combat insurance fraud

South Korean authorities are intensifying efforts to combat insurance fraud and unfair medical billing. The Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service (HIRA) and the Financial Supervisory Service (FSS) signed a memorandum of understanding on the 16th to enhance cooperation and information sharing between public and private insurance sectors.

The partnership focuses on building a real-time analysis system to detect anomalies in medical usage and indemnity insurance claims. By sharing data, the agencies aim to prevent financial leakage and reduce the insurance premium burden on the public. The cooperation also includes improving the stability of automobile insurance reviews and fostering human resource exchange between the organizations.

In a parallel development, the General Insurance Association of Korea launched the 'National Assembly Insurance Crime Prevention Research Forum.' This initiative involves the National Assembly, financial authorities, and investigative agencies to develop legislative improvements and prevention policies. Experts highlighted that insurance crimes are becoming more sophisticated, increasingly utilizing generative AI and deepfake technology to facilitate organized fraud.
