South Korean counties launch new tourism and industry initiatives

South Korean local governments are implementing new initiatives to boost regional economies through specialized tourism.

In Imsil County, the county council has passed three ordinances aimed at fostering the pet industry and promoting pet-friendly travel. The measures provide a legal framework to support pet-related businesses, research and development, and the creation of specialized tourism products. The goal is to transform the region into a destination where travelers can stay longer with their pets, utilizing existing resources like the Osu Dog Tourist Site and upcoming projects such as Petopia Park.

Meanwhile, Damyang County has announced a shift in its Damyangho Ecological Trail project. Due to safety concerns and high costs associated with constructing a pedestrian bridge across the lake, the county will instead develop a circular trail system. The 14 billion won project will connect disconnected forest paths and waterfront walkways, featuring water trails, artificial waterfalls, and night lighting to encourage visitor stays and support local businesses. Construction is targeted to begin in 2027.
