South Korean regional tourism development initiatives
Overview
South Korea is implementing various regional initiatives to decentralize tourism from the Seoul metropolitan area and bolster local economies.
At the national level, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has selected two major regional tourism zones centered around Gimhae and Daegu airports. The Gimhae zone aims to link Busan, Ulsan, Gyeongju, Geoje, and Tongyeong through a ‘Gold Route’ and a ‘Southeast K-Heritage’ course. The Daegu zone will connect Daegu, Andong, and Gyeongju. The government intends to invest approximately 93.5 billion won by 2027 to enhance transportation, branding, and K-culture content.
Complementing these national efforts, local governments are launching specialized projects. Imsil County has passed ordinances to foster a pet-friendly travel industry, supporting businesses and research to encourage longer visitor stays. In Damyang County, officials have pivoted from a pedestrian bridge project to a 14 billion won circular trail system featuring water trails and artificial waterfalls, with construction expected to begin in 2027.
