South Korean healthcare institutions adopt AI for diagnostics and medical reviews

South Korean healthcare institutions are increasingly integrating artificial intelligence into clinical and administrative workflows. Hongseong Medical Center has introduced the ‘DrNoon CVD’ AI cardiovascular risk assessment. This non-invasive test uses AI to analyze retinal imaging to predict the risk of cardiovascular diseases such as myocardial infarction and angina. The process is rapid, providing results within approximately one minute without requiring radiation or blood samples.

Simultaneously, the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service (HIRA) has begun applying AI medical imaging analysis results to actual medical fee reviews. Starting with the knee joint field, the agency uses deep learning algorithms to assist in reviewing medical images. While AI provides analysis to increase efficiency and reduce repetitive tasks, HIRA maintains that final medical and professional decisions are made entirely by human personnel. The agency has established internal ethical and operational standards to govern this digital transition.
