South Korea industrial production, consumption, and investment all decline in August
South Korea's industrial production, consumption, and facility investment all declined in August, marking a 'triple decrease' for the first time since May. According to the National Data Agency, the total industrial production index fell by 1.3% compared to the previous month.
The decline was largely driven by a sharp 24.8% drop in automobile production, the largest decrease since February 2020. This was attributed to reduced working days due to summer vacations being concentrated in August and production disruptions caused by strikes at some manufacturers. Manufacturing production fell by 4.8%, with significant drops also seen in rubber and plastics.
Retail sales decreased by 1.8%, with durable goods like passenger cars and home appliances seeing a 4.5% decline. Facility investment also saw a significant downturn, falling 9.5% month-on-month, primarily due to a 32.8% plunge in investment for transport equipment such as ships and aircraft.
While manufacturing and investment faced headwinds, the service sector saw a slight increase of 0.5%, bolstered by growth in information and communications and professional/scientific services. Construction also showed a 1.9% increase. Economic indicators remained mixed, with the coincident composite index rising by 0.5 points while the leading composite index fell by 0.1 points.
