South Korean manufacturing and industrial decline
Overview
South Korea’s industrial and manufacturing sectors have faced significant downturns. In August, the country experienced a ‘triple decline’ where production, consumption, and investment fell simultaneously, driven largely by a 24.8% plunge in automotive production.
By September, the labor market showed extreme polarization. While total employment rose by 113,000—marking the fourth consecutive month of growth and bringing the 15-64 age group employment rate to a record 70.6%—the gains were uneven. The elderly population (65+) added 254,000 jobs, whereas youth employment (ages 15–29) fell by 147,000, marking 47 consecutive months of decline. Sectoral losses were noted in construction and the accommodation and food service industry. In response, the government announced the ‘National Job Project’ to support vulnerable sectors.
In the automotive sector, September data revealed a 5.5% year-on-year decrease in exports, totaling US$6.05 billion. This decline was attributed to Middle East tensions and stricter regulations on used-car shipments in key markets, leading to a 60% drop in exports to Asia. However, eco-friendly vehicle exports, including hybrids and electric models, rose by 5.9%. Domestically, vehicle sales fell 14.3% due to fewer working days during the Chuseok holiday, though local production saw a 3.7% increase as productivity improved following labor union wage agreements.
