South Korean local governments implement fiscal austerity measures
Local governments in South Korea are implementing austerity measures to address fiscal challenges.
Okcheon County has announced a high-intensity expenditure restructuring plan for its 2027 budget. To fund major projects such as rural basic income and the construction of a new county office, the administration aims to reduce administrative and facility investment costs by at least 4.4 billion won. The county will also implement a sunset system for ineffective projects and adjust labor hours to manage rising personnel costs.
Similarly, the Cheonan City Council has decided to cancel all scheduled overseas official trips for this year, forfeiting a budget of 145 million won. The council aims to share the burden of fiscal difficulties and restore public trust by freezing legislative activity fees and focusing on core duties such as administrative audits, budget reviews, and ordinance inspections.
