South Korean medical sectors advance AI and bionic technology

South Korean medical institutions and technology companies are advancing the integration of artificial intelligence and robotics into healthcare. W Hospital, known for performing the country’s first arm transplant, has launched the ‘K-Bionic Arm Initiative’ in collaboration with KT. This project aims to develop advanced bionic arms that use AI and physical AI technology to learn user movement patterns, allowing for more natural control for patients with limb amputations.

Simultaneously, Wonju City is working to establish itself as a national hub for medical AI industrialization through the ‘Gangwon Medical and Wellness AX Transformation Project.’ The initiative seeks to create a ‘city within a city’ model where medical AI technologies are developed, tested, and commercialized within a real-world urban environment. By leveraging existing medical device industries and extensive healthcare data, the project aims to create a fast-track system for the validation and business implementation of AI-driven medical devices.
