South Korean medical AI and robotics advancement

South Korean medical institutions and regional governments are expanding the integration of artificial intelligence and robotics into healthcare services.

Initial developments focused on bionic technology and urban industrialization. W Hospital and KT launched the ‘K-Bionic Arm Initiative’ to develop AI-driven prosthetic limbs that learn user movement patterns. Concurrently, Wonju City initiated the ‘Gangwon Medical and Wellness AX Transformation Project’ to establish a hub for the development and commercialization of medical AI technologies within a real-world urban environment.

Subsequent advancements in the Daegu region have expanded these efforts into drug discovery and autonomous diagnostics. A new pilot hub is utilizing a ‘Lab-in-the-Loop’ system to accelerate synthetic drug development through AI-proposed candidates and automated laboratory verification. Additionally, a collaborative project is developing the ‘US-AXBOT’, an intelligent 3D autonomous ultrasound robot designed to perform standardized breast cancer examinations using ‘Agentic AI’ to minimize human error.
