South Korean municipalities compete to host new correctional facilities
Seven South Korean local governments have submitted proposals to host four new correctional facilities as part of a Ministry of Justice initiative. The competing municipalities include Uiseong, Yeongdeok, Cheongsong, and Yeongyang in Gyeongsangbuk-do, Jecheon and Boeun in Chungcheongbuk-do, and Jeongseon in Gangwon-do.
Once viewed as undesirable locations, correctional facilities are now being sought by regions facing population decline and economic stagnation. Local leaders expect these facilities to stimulate economies by attracting correctional officers and their families, as well as increasing foot traffic from the estimated 14,000 annual visitors who come to meet inmates.
The Ministry of Justice plans to invest approximately 241.9 billion won per facility, with each site designed to house 1,000 inmates and employ around 250 staff members. The project aims to integrate facilities with local communities by opening amenities such as parks, sports facilities, and electric vehicle charging stations to residents, while also prioritizing local recruitment and the procurement of regional agricultural products. The final sites are expected to be selected in December, with a completion goal of 2034.
