South Korean police rescue victim from voice phishing isolation

South Korean police have rescued a man in his 30s who was held in a state of ‘self-confinement’ at a motel in Seoul due to a sophisticated voice phishing scam. The victim was deceived by individuals impersonating prosecutors, who claimed his bank account was involved in a crime and an arrest warrant had been issued.

Following the scammers' instructions, the victim installed malicious remote-control software on a new mobile phone and moved to a motel to undergo a fake investigation. The criminals forced him to write approximately 45 pages of apologies on his phone's memo app over three days. The victim had already transferred 31 million won to the scammers and was in the process of applying for an additional 42 million won loan when police intervened.

Police were able to locate the victim after detecting suspicious activity related to the malicious app. Through persistent persuasion, officers convinced the victim that the calls he was receiving—even those appearing to be from the police or financial authorities—were actually being intercepted by the scammers via the installed software.
