Seoul police officer arrested for AI deepfake production and sexual exploitation

A serving police officer in Seoul has been arrested for the production and distribution of AI-generated sexual deepfakes and the possession of thousands of illegal sexual files.

The suspect, a sergeant assigned to the traffic division of the Dongdaemun Police Station, was identified through an undercover investigation conducted by the Busan Metropolitan Police Agency. Investigators had infiltrated a Telegram chat room used for sharing sexually explicit fabricated content to track distributors.

Forensic analysis of the officer's mobile devices revealed a massive collection of approximately 5,600 illegal files. This included roughly 2,600 fabricated sexual images, 1,600 items of child or adolescent sexual exploitation material, and 1,300 illegally filmed videos. The officer is also accused of using AI applications to create over 400 deepfake images of acquaintances between March 2022 and July 2024.

Records indicate the suspect joined the police force in April 2024, but the alleged criminal activities began nearly two years prior. Notably, the officer had previously received a suspended indictment for a similar offense before being recruited. Following the investigation, the officer has been relieved of duty.
