South Korean political debate intensifies over prosecution withdrawal authority

Political tensions are rising in South Korea regarding the potential withdrawal of prosecutions related to President Lee Jae-myung. Professor Jin Jung-kwon has criticized the President, urging him to avoid the temptation of using his influence to seek prosecution withdrawals and instead focus on humble governance to avoid political division.

Simultaneously, debate is intensifying within the Democratic Party and the National Assembly over the Special Prosecutor Act. While there is consensus on investigating allegations of fabricated prosecutions, lawmakers are divided on whether the special prosecutor should be granted the authority to withdraw existing indictments.

Kim Seung-won, the nominee for Minister of Justice and a former leader of a group advocating for prosecution withdrawals, has signaled a shift in stance. Despite his previous activism, Kim stated during his preparation for confirmation hearings that he does not intend to directly direct or command the withdrawal of prosecutions through the Prosecutor General, even if appointed.
