Wang Yi visits South Korea to discuss Korean Peninsula peace

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi is conducting a two-day official visit to South Korea, marking the first visit by a Chinese top diplomat to the country in five years. During his stay from August 19 to 20, Wang is scheduled to meet with South Korean President Lee Jae Myung at the Blue House to convey a message from President Xi Jinping.

In addition to the presidential meeting, Wang will hold talks with Foreign Minister Cho Hyun and National Security Adviser Wi Sung-lac. The discussions are expected to focus on bilateral relations, regional security, and the situation on the Korean Peninsula. A key point of interest is President Lee’s recent proposal for multiparty discussions aimed at formally ending the 1950-53 Korean War and replacing the current armistice with a permanent peace regime.

The visit occurs amid shifting regional dynamics, including U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to reduce joint military exercises with South Korea. Following his time in South Korea, Wang is scheduled to travel to Indonesia for high-level diplomatic and defense meetings.
