China-South Korea-Indonesia diplomatic visits

Overview

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi is conducting a diplomatic tour of South Korea and Indonesia.

During his two-day official visit to South Korea from August 19 to 20, Wang Yi is scheduled to meet with President Lee Jae-myung at the Blue House to convey a message from President Xi Jinping. This visit marks the first trip by a top Chinese diplomat to the country in approximately five years. Wang is also set to hold talks with Foreign Minister Cho Hyun and National Security Advisor Wi Seong-rak.

Discussions are expected to focus on bilateral relations, regional security, and the situation on the Korean Peninsula. A significant point of interest is whether the talks will address President Lee’s proposal for ‘multiparty discussions aimed at formally ending the 1950-53 Korean War and replacing the current armistice with a permanent peace regime.’ This visit occurs amid shifting regional dynamics, including U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to reduce joint military exercises with South Korea.

Following the South Korean leg of the tour, Wang Yi will travel to Indonesia to preside over the first meeting of the China-Indonesia Comprehensive Strategic Dialogue mechanism. He will also participate in the second ministerial-level 2+2 Foreign and Defense Ministers' meeting alongside Chinese Defense Minister Dong Jun.
