South Korean regions prepare for World Youth Day 2027
South Korean regions are preparing for the 2027 World Youth Day (WYD), an international Catholic event expected to draw approximately 500,000 participants. The main event in Seoul is scheduled for August 3–8, 2027, with a closing mass potentially attracting up to 1 million people.
Incheon City is being urged to bid for hosting the closing ceremony. Proponents argue that Incheon’s status as a gateway city with Incheon International Airport makes it an ideal location for the massive influx of international pilgrims and clergy. Successful hosting could significantly enhance Incheon’s global brand and provide a major boost to the local economy through tourism and commerce.
In Chungcheongbuk-do, the provincial government and the Catholic Dioceses of Cheongju and Wonju have formed a support group to manage the Regional Days of Dioceses (DID) held from July 29 to August 2, 2027. This group aims to host between 5,000 and 8,000 pilgrims, focusing on safety, transportation, medical support, and cultural exchange programs such as the ‘Chungbuk Eoulligil’ peace walk.
