World Youth Day Seoul 2027 preparations
Overview
The organizing committee for World Youth Day (WYD) in Seoul has entered the implementation stage for the event scheduled for 3–8 August 2027. Led by Archbishop Peter Soon-taick Chung, the gathering will be the first WYD in a country where Catholics are a minority and the second to be held in Asia. The 18th World Youth Day will follow the theme “Take courage! I have overcome the world” (Jn 16:33), originally selected by Pope Francis.
On 3 August 2026, the official hymn, “Confidite, Ego Vici Mundum”, was released. In September 2026, organizers launched a global tree-planting campaign in partnership with the Laudato Si’ Movement to offset carbon emissions. In South Korea, this is integrated into the “Breath of Life” campaign, a collaboration between WYD organizers, the Seoul Metropolitan Government, and the Korea Forest Service. From 14 to 17 September 2026, Seoul hosted the Second International Preparatory Meeting for WYD 2027. Archbishop Jeong Sun-taek, president of the Local Organizing Committee, described the meeting as a “new starting point for the worldwide Church to work together.”
On 5 October 2026, Pope Leo XIV met with approximately 170 members of the South Korean religious community in Rome, describing the event as a “great encounter between memory and the future.” On 24 October 2026, following a video message released on 22 October, Pope Leo XIV officially announced the opening of registration. He described the gathering as a “pilgrimage of faith, friendship, and hope” rather than a mere sightseeing trip. Registration for packages including lodging is scheduled to close on 31 May 2027, while non-lodging registration will remain open beyond that date.
