South Korean regions promote smart farming for youth

South Korean regional governments are implementing various initiatives to support the next generation of agricultural professionals through smart farming technology.

In Sangju, the Sangju Agricultural Technology Center conducted field training for 18 students from the Smart Plant Industry Department of Korea Future Agriculture High School. The five-session program focuses on practical skills, including cucumber seedling transplantation, nutrient solution management, and smart farm environmental control systems.

Meanwhile, Gokseong County has announced a recruitment drive for seven young farmers to occupy a new rental-type smart farm. This warehouse-style vertical farm, built as part of a local extinction response fund, will feature advanced equipment such as six-tier cultivation beds, LED lighting for strawberries, and automated environmental control systems. Selected participants will have the opportunity to lease individual cultivation rooms for three years starting in March 2027.
