South Korean regional agricultural and community support
Overview
South Korean regional governments and communities are implementing various initiatives to support agriculture and local welfare.
In Sangju, the Sangju Agricultural Technology Center has provided field training for students from Korea Future Agriculture High School, focusing on practical skills such as nutrient solution management and smart farm environmental control systems. In Gokseong County, a recruitment drive is underway for young farmers to utilize a new rental-type vertical farm equipped with LED lighting and automated systems.
Gyeongsan City continues to provide free soil testing and beneficial microorganisms to help farmers reduce costs and fertilizer use by analyzing soil pH and organic matter. In Dangjin, community actions include environmental cleanups at Waemok Village Beach and a partnership between Songak Middle School and a Food Bank to donate unconsumed meals to vulnerable populations to reduce waste disposal costs.
To support the autumn farming season, Geochang County is launching a specialized agricultural machinery transport service on October 1 to assist farmers without transport vehicles. The county will also operate its machinery rental office on Saturdays throughout October and November. Similarly, Gangjin County is expanding its rental operations from October 1 to November 30, extending operating hours to 8:00 AM to address labor shortages. The Gangjin Agricultural Technology Center has prepared 594 pieces of equipment, including soybean harvesters and garlic planters, with local farmers eligible for a 50% reduction in rental fees. Gangjin is also focusing on community integration programs to assist new farmers with local settlement.
