South Korean universities and local governments expand industry-academic cooperation

Regional institutions in South Korea are intensifying efforts to strengthen industry-academic cooperation to drive local economic growth and talent development.

Sun Moon University held a networking day for its industry-academic cooperation business group in Buyeo, Chungnam. The event aimed to bridge the gap between local companies and the university by identifying corporate needs and facilitating joint research, technology commercialization, and the operation of specialized departments to train employees. The program included economic forecasting lectures and discussions on leveraging university resources for local startups and prototype development.

In Ansan, the city government convened the first Regional University Win-Win Cooperation Council of 2026 with four local universities: Seoul Institute of the Arts, Shin Ansan University, Ansan University, and Hanyang University ERICA. Key discussions focused on integrating university educational and cultural resources with the Ansan Line undergrounding development project. Additionally, participants addressed the need for AI talent cultivation to support the region's industrial transition and explored ways to increase student engagement in the local community through initiatives like the Ansan Union Festival.
