South Korean vessel completes Arctic shipping pilot voyage
The South Korean container vessel Panstar Acro has successfully completed a government-led pilot round-trip voyage via the Northern Sea Route (NSR). The operation, which concluded with the ship's return to Busan on October 10, 2026, aimed to test the feasibility of Arctic shipping routes.
The round trip from Busan to Europe and back took approximately 49 days, covering 16,385 nautical miles. The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries reported that the route could potentially reduce the distance to Europe by about 35 percent and shorten transit times by roughly 10 days compared to the Suez Canal route. The vessel completed both Arctic passages without the assistance of an icebreaker.
Despite the successful completion, participants noted significant operational hurdles. Challenges included navigating through drifting ice near the Bering Sea and the Vilkitsky Strait, severe weather, and extreme cold that affected fuel and lubricating oil systems. The westbound leg included a stop at Felixstowe, UK, while the eastbound return included calls at Rotterdam, Netherlands, and Gdansk, Poland.
