South Korea Arctic shipping route trials
Overview
South Korea has completed a government-led pilot round-trip voyage via the Northern Sea Route (NSR) using the container vessel PanStar Acro. The 49-day journey from Busan to Europe and back covered approximately 16,385 nautical miles, successfully navigating both Arctic passages without icebreaker assistance.
The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries reported that the route could potentially reduce travel distance to Europe by about 35 percent and shorten transit times by roughly 10 days compared to the Suez Canal route. However, the trial highlighted significant operational hurdles, including severe weather, extreme cold affecting fuel and lubricating oil systems, and the need to navigate drifting ice near the Bering Sea and the Vilkitsky Strait.
While President Lee Jae-myung emphasized the route as a strategic alternative to sea lanes vulnerable to geopolitical conflicts, commercial viability remains a challenge. During the trial, the vessel carried 737 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) of export cargo, failing to meet its 1,300 TEU target, and returned with empty containers. The South Korean government intends to use the data gained to establish regular services by 2030, with further trials for container ships and automobile carriers planned for 2027.
