South Korea's Chungcheong region hit by severe rain, causing floods, sinkholes and one missing person

On July 8‑9 a heavy rainstorm dumped an average of 134.8 mm in Asan city, South Korea's Chungcheong region. The downpour toppled two trees, created a sinkhole and flooded two cars under Bonggang Bridge, though no injuries were reported. The city activated emergency response level 1 and imposed traffic restrictions on several bridges, under‑road passages and parks while inspecting vulnerable infrastructure.

The rain spread across the broader Chungcheong area, with up to 200 mm recorded in some locations. Authorities logged 229 damage reports in Chungnam, 54 in Daejeon and 323 in Chungbuk. Flooding affected underground roadways, bridges, fields, greenhouses and triggered landslides that blocked roads. Schools in several districts were closed. In North Gyeongsang's Yeongju, a 70‑year‑old man disappeared after slipping into a rapid stream. Rescue teams deployed more than 200 personnel and dozens of vehicles to search for him.
